Parfum № 1Lumière Fossile

Light, forty million years old,
remembered in amber.

Descend

Prelude

In the forests of the Eocene, sunlight fell through pine resin and never left. The resin hardened. The forests drowned. The light stayed. Lumière Fossile is that light, decanted — a perfume that opens cold and bright as dawn on stone, warms through honeyed flowers, and settles, finally, into amber that has waited forty million years to be worn.

Les Notes de Tête · The First Minute

L’Ouverture

The first minute is dawn on cold stone. Calabrian bergamot, pressed within hours of picking, strikes like low sun through a window that has not been opened all winter. Saffron threads lend the light its metal; a whisper of pink pepper gives it edge. Aldehydes lift everything half an inch off the skin — the smell of brightness itself, before brightness has anything to shine on.

  • Saffronhand-pulled stigmas, Kozani
  • Pink PepperCO₂ extraction, Réunion

Les Notes de Cœur · The First Hours

Le Cœur

Then the stone warms. Orris butter — iris roots aged six years in Tuscan cellars before a single gram is rendered — gives the perfume its powdered, expensive silence. Mimosa arrives drenched in honey; jasmine sambac, picked at night, breathes underneath. A thread of beeswax absolute runs through the heart like sunlight through a jar, and for four hours the fragrance is exactly this: gold, suspended.

  • Honeyed Mimosaabsolute, Tanneron hills
  • Jasmine Sambacnight harvest, Tamil Nadu

Les Notes de Fond · The Long Evening

Le Fond

And at last, the fossil. A tincture of true Baltic amber — succinite, resin that fell from Eocene pines and hardened under a vanished sea — anchors a base of labdanum, Mysore-style sandalwood and ambergris accord. Bourbon vanilla deepens it; a breath of oakmoss keeps it honest. This is the note that outlasts the evening, the one still on your collar tomorrow: warm, mineral, faintly sweet. Old light, still burning.

La Maison · Depuis 1889

A House Built on Light

Héloïse Aubanel founded the maison in Grasse in 1889 with a single conviction: that perfume is not scent but light held in suspension. Her first workshop stood behind a glazier’s on the rue de l’Oratoire, and she credited the glass — the way afternoon sun broke through the panes into warm and cold — with teaching her more than any distiller ever did.

Five generations later the house still composes by her method: every formula is written as a score of temperatures, from the coldest register of the opening to the warmest ember of the base. Lumière Fossile, our Parfum № 1, took Élodie Vermeil-Duras eleven years and three hundred and twelve trials. It is the first fragrance the maison has numbered rather than named for a flower — because, she says, “there is no flower old enough.”

The Flacon   Each bottle is mouth-blown at the Verrerie de Biot, its walls a deliberate centimetre thick so that the extrait sits inside its own lens. The collar is gilded by hand with 23-carat champagne gold. Held to a window, the bottle does what the perfume does: it takes ordinary daylight and returns it older, warmer, and impossible to ignore.

Les Éloges

“One wears Lumière Fossile the way one wears late afternoon: reluctantly taking it off.”

La Revue des Parfums, Paris

“The rare amber that refuses to be dessert. Mineral, patient, and quietly devastating — the finest first act from any house in a decade.”

The Olfactory Review, London

“Vermeil-Duras has bottled the exact temperature of remembered sunlight.”

Profumo Critica, Milan
